The retention of the breath allows the alveoli in the lungs a greater opportunity to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Advanced pranayama exercises are of particular benefit to singers, athletes and professional speakers.
Benefits: increased lung capacity, mental clarity, oxygenation of the blood, improves memory and focus
Contraindications: do not perform this breath if you have bronchitis, asthma or high blood pressure, or if you are a beginner pranayama student – always do advanced yogic practices under the guidance of a qualified instructor
