What is Meditation? (article)

What is meditation - most of you have heard of it, some of you may have even tried it - but for many of us it is an alluring part of Eastern spiritual practice, though it is not solely a spiritual endeavour. The word meditation often conjures images of an Indian sage in a loincloth or a vision of the Buddha seated in serene contemplation; the image is one of stillness and composure. Yogis, Zen Masters, Taoists have all meditated for millennia.

Simple Meditation

Simple Meditation

This basic meditation is also one of the most powerful ways of attaining inner peace, as well as learning techniques that you can carry into any meditation practice. Keep in mind that simple does not mean inferior, merely uncomplicated and accessible. Duration: 9 min

Padma Meditation 1 (Audio only)

Can your meditation practice truly be a gift to yourself, a place of peace? We certainly think so – and part of that is to create a space that is yours and yours alone. We are very fortunate to have Padma’s teachings as part of our project. During this meditation, she will guide you into a sacred meditation space in your environment and in your Self. Your space should be calm, clean, tranquil and fluid.

This 20-minute meditation is your time to clear your mind, open your heart and refresh your body. Using the senses as a guide to relaxation, Padma brings you into the present moment, into the luxurious, clean feeling of simply being... your Self. Duration 20 min

Padma Meditation 2

In yoga sciences, the practices of breath work are both subtle and powerful, and essential to good health and vitality. Once again, Padma guides you to inner awareness through this energetic breathing practice. Using a combination of Belly Breathing, Ujayii/Ocean Sounding Breath, and Alternate Nostril Breathing /Nadi Shodhana, Padma shows you how to stimulate your nervous system, and clear your sinuses just by breathing.

There is no strain in this practice, just deep breathing, from the belly. Breathing at your own pace, your own ability, you will increase your confidence, calm and create a sense of steadiness with which you can connect at any time. This meditation reacquaints you with the natural rhythm of your breathing, while improving your posture, strengthening your abdominal muscles and releasing any pent up anxiety in your body and mind. Duration 20 min

Inner Gazing Meditation

Sometimes it is helpful to use a sacred object, or external focal point in meditation, to give the restless monkey mind something to do while the rest of you creates stillness.

In this more advanced meditation practice, the object is held in your minds’ eye - for instance, you can hold the image of a candle flame or a yin/yang symbol internally as you observe your breath and your thoughts, mindful of what arises. The discipline of this internal focus brings your meditation to deeper places in your mind, creating deeper calm, inner peace and spiritual connection. Duration: 7 min

Listening Meditation
